Troubleshooting Time Doctor Server Errors

TL;DR:

Follow these steps to troubleshoot server errors in Time Doctor:

  • Verify internet connectivity

  • Test communication with Time Doctor servers

  • Clear local cache files

  • Check DNS resolution

  • Override DNS if needed

  • Whitelist Time Doctor in the firewall settings

Should issues persist, submit your local cache files to support.

When encountering messages like "The Time Doctor server has encountered an error" or "Server offline," several issues could be the cause. Perform the following diagnostics to identify and resolve the problem.

Possible Causes

  • Local network issues

  • Router or firewall blocking connection

  • ISP-related problems

  • DNS resolution failures

Ensure that the latest version of the Time Doctor application is installed. Temporarily disable any security suites (e.g., Avast, Norton, Symantec, McAfee) to avoid interference.

Step A: Check Server Communication

  1. Confirm active internet connectivity. Attempt to load any website, particularly http://login.timedoctor.com.

  2. If unable to access the internet, inspect your cables, router, or modem settings.

  3. Open a browser and visit https://api.timedoctor.com/v2/api/server_connection_test.php. If successful, the message "Connected to Time Doctor Server" appears.

  4. Visit http://api.timedoctor.com/. You should be redirected to the Time Doctor API documentation.

Step B: Delete Local Cache File

Time Doctor Lite and Pro

  1. Exit the Time Doctor app via Options > Exit.

  2. Delete the local cache folder. Follow instructions for Windows, Mac, and Ubuntu/Linux.

  3. Restart the app. Attempt to log in.

New Time Doctor App (Windows and Mac only)

  1. Exit the Time Doctor app via File > Exit.

  2. Delete the local cache folder.

  3. Restart the app. Attempt to log in.

Step C: Check DNS Name Resolution

Windows

  1. Open Start > Run, type CMD, and press Enter.

  2. Type nslookup and press Enter.

  3. Type api.timedoctor.com and press Enter. Ensure an IP address is returned.

  4. Type login.timedoctor.com and press Enter. Again, an IP address should be returned.

If errors like "Non-existent domain" appear, DNS resolution must be corrected.

Linux

  1. Open the terminal (e.g., gnome-terminal, xterm).

  2. Run dig api.timedoctor.com. Confirm the output includes an IP address.

  3. Run dig login.timedoctor.com. Confirm the output includes an IP address.

DNS resolution issues require DNS server overrides.

Step D: Override DNS on Windows 7

  1. Open Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center.

  2. Click Change adapter settings.

  3. Right-click on your connection type (Wi-Fi or Local Area Connection) and select Properties.

  4. When prompted, click Yes.

  5. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties.

  6. Choose Use the following DNS server addresses.

  7. Enter one of the following DNS servers:

    1. Google DNS: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

    2. OpenDNS: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

    3. Level 3: 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.1

Step E: Allow Time Doctor in Windows Firewall

  1. Open Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Firewall.

  2. Click Allow an app through Windows Firewall.

  3. Select Allow another app.

  4. Choose Time Doctor from the list and click Add.

Time Doctor should now appear in the Allowed apps and features list.
